Experience and Wisdom

Dr. Sekula has been in the Health and Medical field for more than 20 years. He used to be one of those that thought he knew everything. Now he's convinced that the more he learns, the less he knows.

With that being said, he's confident in a few things, most notably:

  • As an American public, we've been fed a bunch of bologna when it comes to what constitutes a healthy diet.
  • Ditto for exercise.
  • While he's a firm believer in technology and advancements in productivity and efficiency, the invention of televisions, computers and cell phones (don't forget the electricity that runs them all) are deterimental to health when not used properly. Unfortunately, few of us use them properly.
  • Rice and potatoes are good for you, like electricity, when eaten properly and in context.
  • Depending on activity level, health status (diabetic or not, for example) and goals, eating 75 - 100 grams of "safe starches" per day is probably required.
  • Wheat is not good for you. Period. End of discussion. You shouldn't care what T. Colin Campbell says.
  • Industrially processed vegetable oils are bad for you. They are REALLY bad for you!
  • Saturated fat is NOT bad for you. True, Crisco is a saturated fat. But it's no more real food than margarine.
  • Speaking of margarine, butter is better.
  • Dietitians, diabetes educators and most healthcare professionals can't seem to think outside of their flowchart learning environment. They seem hell-bent on getting you to consume too much of the bad foods on a daily basis. Too quick to blame you for your failings. And, most definitely, too quick to prescribe a statin when your cholesterol gets to 205. No thank you.

The list is long enough, even though it could be longer.

Professional Associations

Scientific Advisor of the Medical Wellness Association.

Member in good standing of the Houston West Chamber of Commerce. Recently named Chair-Elect of the Health & Wellness Committee. (The diabetes educators ought to get a kick out of this!)

Personal

Married with two daughters, one in middle school the other in elementary school. Both are pretty good swimmers and volleyball players.

On a side note, the ratio of females to males recently improved. We had to put our dog to sleep. SHE would have been 16 (in human years) this year.

Likes and Dislikes...

Food & Drink

  • Seafood, beef, pork and poultry...in that order. Well, seafood and beef are 1 and 1A.
  • Almost all vegetables, with special affinity for baby spinach, olives, peppers (all kinds), mushrooms, and more.
  • Water, sparkling water, coffee, green tea, Scotch on the rocks (Glenlivet), Chianti's and Cabernet's. Don't forget raw goat's milk and coconut milk.
  • Bacon and avocados. They deserve a line unto themselves.

Hobbies and Leisure

  • Reading...work and non-work materials. For non-work reading, the preference is fast-paced, thriller or crime-drama books. The Mitch Rapp series is a good example.
  • Golf. Next.
  • Spending time with his daughters; they are growing too fast.
  • Music? All kinds (except rap - that's not music) and it depends. During working hours, classical music is usually playing in the background. It helps the stress and productivity levels. Gipsy Kings are a favorite, too.
