Hi, Thanks for coming by. Hyperinsulinemia is indeed a bad condition. The best test for this is HbA1C or simply A1C. It provides an overall average blood sugar for the previous 30 days. If I were you, I'd get this test and if your doctor says your high, i'd change eating habits right away. Come back for more if you have questions.

Wow I never knew that about hyperinsulinemia, is there some test for it? I feel that I cant get full no matter what I eat or how much of it I eat, I want more and I NEED more. I am trying supplements to curb my growing need for food and weight.

Exercise and strict dieting can do magic if you are trying to lose weight. I did a lot of cardio just to lose weight.;.-

I hear a lot about leptin, too. I think it's important but I don't think it's as important as insulin. I don't think it has any direct role in how much fat our body stores. I think leptin is controlled by insulin, at least at the adipose tissue sites. There is however, something different going on at the liver, where it appears leptin downregulates an enzyme (SCD-1), which in turn increases fatty acid oxidation. I can see this working if leptin is an indicator of fat storage. As long as it's being released, fatty acids can be oxidized. Leptin resistance, then, would work to store more fat and burn less of it. There's more to learn, for sure. But I think, in general, leptin has a more 'signaling' role than anything else.

Understood about hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance, but what about the role of leptin that I am hearing more and more about, and it's role in obesity? Thanks, Dr. for your blog.
