Say goodbye to '07. Let's make '08 GREAT!

Are you in the groove yet? Has it sunk in that a New Year is upon us? I get a feeling of excitement. I'm excited with the promise that things will get better from here...put the mistakes behind me...and become a better person. Can't you just feel it?

A New Year brings hope for your dreams. A fresh start. A new you.

And if you're like most people, your dream right now is losing weight and getting healthier.

To lose weight, there are two indisputable truths you must follow for success: diet and exercise. You must eat healthier and exercise more. Don't turn into that skinny-fat person I talked about yesterday. Change your diet, get more exercise, melt the fat off your body and change its shape. You'll look and feel much better.

Diet and exercise are both important. Today, I'm going to focus on your diet and give you some food for thought...Something that will make you think about your relationship with food. And I'm going to start by asking you a question.

Why do you eat?

At first glance, the answer to this question is obvious. But I want you to think about it. Why do you eat? Your initial thoughts might be that you eat to feed your body. That's true. Your body needs fuel and you can only get fuel from food. But what kind of fuel is a hamburger? What kind of fuel is a donut? What kind of fuel is a bag of chips? I'm sure you've eaten all of these things. How are these fueling your body?

Not very well.

So there is more to this question than you originally thought. Why do you eat?

The painful truth is that most of us eat too much and we eat too much bad food. So you're eating for reasons other than fueling your body. Otherwise, there wouldn't be an epidemic of obesity, type II diabetes, heart disease and other conditions related to diet and exercise. And, we'd all be walking around sportin' those abs.

There are four reasons why you eat and knowing them will help you achieve your goals and make it great in '08.

  1. Emotional eater. Do you turn to food when things aren't going well? I once had a client who received some bad news about a member of her family. She was so emotional that at 11pm she went to the grocery store, bought a bag of Snickers candy bars and proceeded to eat the whole thing! How's that for emotional eating? That may be a little extreme but if you turn to food when you are stressed or emotional, you can consume a whole bunch of bad calories before you even realize what is going on. And all of those extra calories? They are immediately turned into fat and stored in your gut, on your hips, your butt or on your thighs.
  2. Habitual eater. You always have seconds and you always hav dessert after dinner. That's a lot of extra calories. Skip on one of the two for three weeks then work on the other. Within a couple of days, you feel lighter and more energetic.
  3. Social eater. The parties are terrible. All the food. All the social pressure. Before you know it, you've loaded up a plate with bad food and a lot of it. Don't let the "Come on, one more piece won't matter" comments get to you. One more piece certainly will matter. Besides, they only want you to join them so that your peer pressure of control won't make them feel bad.
  4. When you are hungry. This is the best reason for eating and I put it last. Try eating only when you are hungry. Don't wait until you are starving or you will eat everything in sight. Wait until you are slightly hungry. Eat slowly and monitor how you feel over the next few days. I guarantee you will lose weight and feel better.

Now after reading this, I want you to think about why you eat. Give it some serious thought. Read this email again and use some of my suggestions. You'll start getting results. You'll feel better, look better and your body will thank you.
