Brian's Report, Issue #33 and current issue.

Subscribers: 262 and counting...

Next Issue: August 21, 2007

Welcome

In the last issue we talked about the importance of flexibility, specifically trunk flexibility. In today’s article, you’ll get a video demonstration of a hip mobility exercise.

So let's get started...

News and updates!
Regarding the news announcement for the Methodist Hospital System, we finally have a start date, August 21, 2007. If the Methodist Hospital trusts us with their medical services, you should feel comfortable knowing that what you get from us is to the point. There is no fluff, misinformation or slick talk - just what you need and when you need it.

On to this weeks poll
I learned something, a quick recap of last week's poll and the PGA Championship

So what did I learn?
I guess you are never too old (according to my daughters, really old), too stubborn (according to everybody else, me to a Tee) or stupid (uh...no comment) to learn something new.

I learned that embedding the poll inside an email doesn't work. The responses have to come from a webpage. I'm sure it can work through an email, but that brings up the stupid part again and I don't want to go there.

So from now on, all polls will require visiting the website to cast your vote.

A quick recap
In case you missed it, Sergio didn't fare too well in British Open poll. See the results here.

PGA Championship
Who's going to win? You can't be serious all the time, so the choices are meant for a little amusement during your daily grind. Vote below.

Select your answer by clicking on the appropriate box.
Then click "Submit" to register your vote. You'll be brought right back here.
Who will win the PGA Championship this week?
Doug ("This is not an outdoors tournament?") Pike
Rory ("the course is its most vulnerable - ever!") Sabbatini
NOT Rory Sabbatini (all for fun)
Tiger (uh...nevermind)
Ernie Singh Goosen (I'll betcha someone in Europe has this name)
To get a good feel for your "projections," I'll wait until after the tournament to post results.

Now, on to the serious stuff...

Blog Update
Recent post(s) to the blog:

  • Read this: If you're in the health care field or just wanting to read something more regarding the Health Care, Insurance and Medical Industry, read this. It's a rather long, but provocative look at one MD's views.
  • Stupid Obesity - Socially Contagious? Remember that report that came out a couple of weeks ago on obesity being socially contagious? It was all over the news. Well, I don’t agree. Read this article to find out why.

Golf-Fitness Seminar
We had the golf-fitness seminar on July 28, 2007. Based on the exit surveys, those in attendance had a great time. Look for another in October or November of this year.

Vortex Previews
Haven’t decided yet if you want to take the Vortex Preview? You better decide quickly! Slots are filling up and I don’t want you to miss out on this opportunity. To help you decide, tomorrow there will be a post with golf-specific exercises on the Vortex.

Don’t forget, by signing up you'll get the following:

  • a 1-hour workout,
  • t-shirt
  • and more

Importantly, someone is going to win 1-month of free golf-specific group training (but to be eligible, you have to go through the preview). It might as well be you.

Fitness Article!
Last issue we discussed the importance of flexibility. In this video demonstration, you’ll see me performing a Lateral Shuffle on a BOSU Trainer.

This is a great exercise for many reasons. First, it improves the fast-twitch muscle fibers of your hips. The result is that you can move those hips faster and generate more power in your swing. Second, it improves dynamic flexibility, which loosens up your hips for a greater turn and/or better hip clearance. Third, maintaining an upright spine angle (no slouching) really taxes your postural muscles. This is great over those last few holes. Finally, it’s a form of high-intensity cardio. Don’t believe me, try it for a minute. You can also ask anyone who’s done it, they absolutely love this exercise.

Click one of the pictures below to see the video.

Below is a text description of the exercise. There are also two photos, showing the starting (right side photo) and ending positions (left side photo). Movement pictures were hard to get, too blurry. So watch the video and then print out the text description and take it with you to the gym (or better yet, come see me for some instruction).

Name: Lateral Shuffle, BOSU Trainer
Purpose
Improved lateral mobility and quickness of the hips for better dynamic flexibility, stability and power development. All of which lead to a better golf swing.

Description
Moving over the BOSU trainer and getting from one side to the other as quickly and under control as possible.

Starting Position
Stand in athletic position and place right foot on BOSU trainer and left foot on floor. Keep your weight evenly distributed.

Movement
To begin the movement, push (in a lateral direction) with your right foot and bring your left foot on to the BOSU trainer and your right foot to the floor on the opposite side of the BOSU trainer.

Your left foot will land on top of the BOSU trainer first then your right foot will land on the floor. As soon as your right foot hits the floor, do the exact opposite and end up back in the starting position.

Movement Keys
Keep your back straight and hips bent throughout the movement.

Beginners
Move slowly and concentrate on form.

Advanced
Move quickly and bend your knees a little more to increase the intensity of the exercise.

Add this to your workouts and I guarantee your golf game will improve. Report back to me with your results.

Coming soon...Fitness DVDs!
The Boot Camp and 2 Balls Program will be available on DVD soon. When? I can't say for sure. But we begin shooting the last two weeks of August. You can bet that you'll be the first to know.

This is significant for at least two reasons. First, you'll have access to a golf-specific workout wherever you have a DVD player, and second, anyone will be able to join the Boot Camp Online monthly workout program. You can live on the other side of the "pond" or right next door. It doesn't matter.

By signing up you'll get a new workout each and every month, with all the benefits of receiving it over the internet - 24-hr access, working out at your own convenience, email support and more. Additionally, each month we'll have a conference call to answer any questions you may have, keep you on track and give you further information.

So check it out today.

That's all, see you next issue!

Exercise and golf (in no particular order)!

Brian
